Service Description

​*non-refundable $550 deposit due when course is booked* STaRS (Student Training as Research Scientists) is a is a five day (10AM-3PM) daily boat adventure through the San Juan Islands. Students conduct different field work throughout the week, comparing different regions in the Salish Sea. Some of the projects may include an intertidal survey, listening for orca acoustics, bull kelp survey, tufted puffin foraging survey, marine bird survey, forage fish survey, and more.  This program will provide an excellent introduction to field research experiences, practice with the scientific method, engagement in data collection and analysis, and learning about the importance of observations. This program is also a great introduction to future career fields. Each day includes healthy snacks and a local lunch and at the end of the program, students will receive an awesome STaRS T-shirt. Student outcomes: Practice with the scientific method Obtain experience and exposure to field research tools and techniques Understand how science and research can influence policy and action steps for conservation​ Exposure to field work Goals: Stimulate interest in a future career in the fields of marine science and conservation  Explore the field of science​ Recruit and train the next generation of marine conservation scientists​ and ocean advocates Develop student comfort in a field research setting and provide resources that can ensure success in higher education Provide the opportunity for field research and data collection in marine science​


Cancellation Policy

In the event of any cancellation, regardless of when the cancellation is initiated, the credit card processing fee will not be refunded (3%). Cancellation Refunds vary by course: Spring, Fall, and Winter Programs: if cancelled 5 days prior to the course, the class fee will be refunded to you, less the credit card processing fee (3%). If cancelled any time after that, there will not be a refund for this course. Summer Programs: Cancellations 91+ days prior to session start date = Refundable less CC processing fees & $150 deposit Cancellations between 61 and 90 days prior to session start date = Refundable less CC processing fees & 50% fee of full tuition Cancellations between 0 and 60 days prior to session start date = non-refundable Exceptions to this policy cannot be made for any reason, including weather or personal emergencies. All cancellations must be submitted in writing and must be received in the above time frames. ____ The Pulse: There are no refunds available for our virtual continuing education program.
