Marbled Murrelets and Pigeon Guillemots are both web-footed, surface-diving, fish-pursuing seabirds of the Pacific Coast. Both these birds come to land during their summer breeding season but their nesting sites could not be more different. The murrelet nests on trees in coastal forests, the guillemot in burrows in shoreline bluffs and rocky nooks. Yet both mange to keep their nests and nesting behaviors largely hidden from predators and from our curious eyes. How do they do it?
