A Partnership Between The Whale Museum & The Salish Sea School

What is an Explorer Kit?

Bring the magic of the Salish Sea straight to your classroom, library, community event, or even your living room! Our portable, museum-quality Marine Education Kits are packed with hands-on resources that make it easy to inspire curiosity and highlight the incredible wildlife of the Salish Sea.

These kits are a partnership between The Whale Museum and The Salish Sea School, created to spark wonder, make science accessible, and bring learning to life.

Choose from Three Salish Sea Explorer Kits:

  1. Flipping Out with Pinnipeds

  2. Schooling with Salmon

  3. Diving into Cetaceans

Who Are They For?

Perfect for learners preschool through high school — these kits can:

  • Enhance a field trip or program with The Whale Museum or The Salish Sea School

  • Stand alone as ready-to-use marine science adventures for classrooms, libraries, or community groups

  • Bring ocean discovery home, making marine science fun and accessible anywhere

  • Authentic specimens you can see and touch

  • Lesson plans and ideas to guide learning

  • Engaging activities for different ages

  • Curated resources to go deeper into marine life

How It Works

  1. Pick Your Kit – Review the three available themes below.

  2. Check the Rental Terms & Conditions – Know what to expect before renting.

  3. Reserve Your Kit –

    • For Anacortes pick-up: Reserve your kit by clicking on the button below your chosen kit.

    • For Friday Harbor pick-up: Visit The Whale Museum’s website.

  4. Pick-Up Your Kit - Pick up after noon on Saturday, return before noon the following Saturday!

Cost

Each rental is $60 – a small price for a big splash of learning! 

Each person may check out one kit at a time for up to two weeks.
