Service Description

Non-refundable $350 deposit due today! Remaining balance due 90 days prior to camp. Summer STaRS (Student Training as Research Scientists) is a five day boat-based research adventure through the San Juan Islands, with an overnight camping experience on Thursday night. This camp is an excellent introduction to field research practices, utilizing the scientific method, data collection and analysis, and honing observation skills. This is a perfect program for students interested in marine science careers. Each day students will explore different organisms and practice field skills to conduct research and surveys. Thursday night, students will be invited to camp at Washington Park and explore the forest and sea by night. Topics will include intertidal species abundance and distribution, orca acoustic and visual observation, bull kelp monitoring, marine bird foraging and nesting observation, forage fish egg collection, and more. Healthy snacks and lunches are included each day, as well as dinner on Thursday evening and breakfast on Friday morning. Students also receive an awesome STaRS T-shirt. Camp will meet from 10:30AM-4PM Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday; and 10:30AM Thursday to 3PM on Friday (overnight at Washington Park). All camping gear will be provided by the Salish Sea School, however, students are welcome to use their own sleeping pads and sleeping bags if preferred.
